Viewing distance guide
TV Viewing Distance Chart for 43 to 85 Inch Screens
TV size is not just about fitting on the wall. Seating distance determines whether the screen feels comfortable or immersive.
Quick answer
For a 55 inch 16:9 TV, a relaxed 30 degree viewing distance is about 7.45 ft. For a 65 inch TV it is about 8.81 ft, and for a 75 inch TV it is about 10.16 ft.
How the distance is calculated
The viewing distance formula uses screen width and target horizontal field of view. A 30 degree field feels relaxed for mixed use. A 40 degree field feels more cinematic.
Because the formula uses screen width, the screen diagonal must first be converted into physical width from the aspect ratio.
How to choose a distance
Use 30 degrees as a conservative starting point for living rooms, mixed TV watching and casual gaming. Use 40 degrees when you want more immersion and are comfortable sitting closer.
Personal eyesight, subtitles, room layout and content type can change the ideal distance, so treat the chart as a starting range.

Frequently asked questions

Use 30 degrees for relaxed viewing and 40 degrees for a more immersive movie-like setup.
Where do I measure from?
Measure from the viewer’s eyes to the screen plane, not from the back wall.
